I spoke with Lee at around 11:00 a.m. and Terry is doing "better". He has gotten up a lot more today and is actually trying to do some paperwork. She says he has it all over the place! Terry is scheduled for an MRI tonight at 8:30 and will be going to the doctor tomorrow to discuss the findings. He had his first physical therapy treatment yesterday and did fairly well. He will have the therapy twice a week. Update......I was at the hospital visiting with Dennis and Abbey Turner at around 8:30 tonight and who walks in but Terry and Lee!.........They were headed to the MRI for Terry and it was wonderful to see them both walking into the room. Terry and Lee both had smiles on their faces and the room immediately filled with joy! What and AWESOME experience!!!!!!!!!!

Terry had the MRI last night (at around 10:30 p.m.) and has been to his doctors appointment this morning. The doctor reported that there are no new abscess pockets which is great news. His infection count is down almost one-half since surgery but he still has a ways to go. The doctor encouraged Terry to be patient as this is going to be a long and slow process. The beads and material securing the bone that are in the leg now can come out anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months depending on how Terry heals. They did take the staples and sutures out today. His spirits are good today but the swelling in the leg is significant because he walked on it too much yesterday.

Monday - October 15 Terry is continuing to improve however he is having a really bad time with his leg swelling if he is up much at all. With infection levels decreasing, he is feeling better and wants to start getting out and about but sure does have a hard time in the evening because of the swelling and pressure. Hopefully he will be out at lunchtime and I can get some more information - Morning has been real busy here!

We know it is hard to keep Terry down! He is trying so hard to get his strength back and being up and about is probably the best way but by late in the day his leg hurts and is swelling so bad. I guess as it heals the swelling will stop. With the plans for the Toy Run on Saturday, you know Lee is running full speed and Terry is doing more than he should so if you get a minute and want to help them, just call Lee. It is good for them to have this to be working on but it sure will keep them busy this week. Hope he won't over do it.

It is so great to see the improvement in Terry and especially with so much on the news the last few days about MRSA, the drug-resistant staph infection (also known as the "superbug") which is what Terry has been fighting. He is a strong, healthy man and we have all seen what it has done to him. He has fought with everything in him - AND is going to win!!! He still daily takes the Vancomycin thru the Picc line in his arm - it should take about 2 hours but the picc line is slow these days so it has been running about 3 hours. He really enjoys outings and hanging out in the yard and has been getting out more and more each day. Slowly his strength is building and the pain level is under control but not gone. He still over does it before he realizes it - guess it is hard to slow down after being down for so long and getting some mobility. Keep praying for his recovery and for his family. Such a long, hard road for them all....

We had lunch with Terry & Lee today and they are busy, busy, busy getting ready for Saturday. It is going to be so hard to keep Terry at the pace he should be! He was having a little trouble with his picc line today - the IV antibiotic that usually takes about 2 hours to go in had taken over 4 today and was still not done. It may be clogged but he doesn't have a doctor's appointment until next week. He seems to be feeling pretty good and has been working his leg muscles on a machine that moves his leg for him. He has used it twice already and will be using it again today. It is helping the range of motion in his leg! Keep praying! We know God is here but we have seen some real miracles in our town lately!

As we knew it would be, it was hard to keep Terry still at the TR Police Dept. Toy Run because he is so used to being right there handling things however I must say he did spend a good bit of time in his reclining chair. Sunday he was able to spend alot of time resting and staying off of it and the swelling has gone back down a good bit. He is planning to relax again today just to get back to where he needs to be. Physical therapy is coming to him this afternoon and he goes to the doctor in a few days. More details as they come available...

Tuesday - Oct. 23 A major setback - One time previously Terry's knee made a weird pop sound and hurt real bad. It has done it again (yesterday) and he cannot put any weight on it or let it hang down. It causes severe pain and turns a purply color. The physical therapist that came yesterday was very concerned (especially since the circulation seems to be being cut off). They have tried to reach doctors but had no luck. Dr. Moon is out of town, infectious disease doctor did call back but they have an appointment already scheduled for tomorrow at 8:00 AM. The infectious disease office did sent a copy of the report from yesterdays blood test and the infection level has gone up from 22.3 to 45.9 in one week. This is very scarey - hopefully they can find out in a little while what they need to do. We know what we can do - PRAY! More reported just as soon as I hear more.

New information! Terry and Lee just got home from the doctor's office where they got an X-Ray on Terry's leg. The bone is broken in his leg again and that is what is causing the severe pain. He is now in a brace from his ankle to his thigh and that keeps the muscle from having to try to move his leg. His physical therapy has been cancelled for now and he is going to work hard on fighting the infection, dealing with the break later. By that I mean it may have to be reset later but fighting the infection and getting it under control is the first priority. He will see the infectious disease doctor in the morning but the doctor today felt like the infection level could have been up some just due to the activities he does in the healing process. Like a little more use of the leg and even the machine he used last week that was supposed to strengthen his leg. As you build strength you add more activity but the activity could stir up the infection. He sounded so much better tonight just knowing what was going on. I will post more tomorrow after his appointment in the morning.

Wednesday - Oct. 24 The infectious disease doctor said things really looked okay with the infection in Terry's leg. He will see him again in two weeks and at this time is continuing the two antibiotics - vancomycin and risanpin which are supposed to be the best for treating the staph infection commonly known as MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aurelus). Terry had asked about a new medicine that you take by mouth but was told it was more for tissue and skin but what Terry is taking is better for his since it is in the bone. Terry sounds good and will just keep fighting hard to get well soon! He is a real trooper. (And Lee too)

My heart is breaking here. I've read most of the posts and am amazed by the strength Terry has shown. Please pass mt regards to him and his loved ones and let them know that Atlanta is thinking kind thoughts for them.

Navychief, Thank you for your concern and compassion. Terry has been a friend of mine for 40+ years and he is a real ring leader for a crowd of bikers in our area. He is a great guy and has been through sooo much.
Update for tonight - Terry came to his daughter's house tonight for a little while and because of the brace up his leg, it is hard for him to move around alot. I am sure the outing did him good but he came in and immediatly propped his leg up. He says it is just best if he stays in one place until he has to move. Pain level is still pretty high but our Terry is tough. Right now he just has to wait - take life day by day trying to handle the pain while his leg heals.

October 29, 2007 Tomorrow morning Terry goes to the doctor to have his picc line flushed out. It had been taking way too long to get his meds in but seems to be clogged entirely now. Then he will be changing to a different antibiotic - Daptomycin. Over time your body can become immune to the antibiotics and he has been on the Vancomycin for quite a while. He will continue the risanpin also. He is in more pain now with the new break in his leg so he is very limited in his mobility. Where he was beginning to get out some, he is home mostly now. More info. tomorrow after he goes to the doctor.

Okay, news from the doctor today! Terry is starting the new antibiotic and the ball of medicine is smaller than the old antibiotic balls and should only take about 30 minutes going in the picc line. His infection level is dropping - down to 31.3 this week. Good news!
