Dennis Turner had a motorcycle accident on White Horse Road late today and a car pulled out in front of him. He is in surgery at this time - surgery will take 10 - 12 hours.  More detail will be posted as I find out but PRAY hard.  I do not know for sure but have been told he has a broken back with pelvic and kidney damage..

New information!! The information above is what was told at the hospital last night about 8:30 PM. Abbey had been told that on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being really bad, this accident was a 10. They told her that only 10% of people with this damage would not be paralyzed. Dennis was taken to surgery to work on his broken back (up high near his neck) at about 9:00 PM. Abbey was told the surgery would be many hours but she received a call about midnight that the surgery was just starting and they would call her later. One of her later calls at about 1:00 or so they told her they were closing him and a doctor would be out to talk to her. It was scary because it was so quick. When the doctor came out he said he had gotten the spine lined back up great and they were in the 10%. There is still about a 2% chance but...   They told her they were waiting until Thur. to see if more surgery from the back of the spine were necessary. Surgery will need to be lined up still about his pelvis but they want to review what they are going to do. There is a contraption on his left knee that will support the traction on that leg. At 4:00 AM they were putting the traction bars on his bed to hook him up.  At that time he was responsive, opening his eyes and talking (just barely). He can't move his mouth much because of the neck brace and trauma but he did talk a little bit. Blood pressure was 117 / 42. Abbey said she thought he had bit the edge of his tongue completely around the tooth line. There were only a few little cuts and scratches but no road rash. He never hit the road. A SUV pulled out in front of him on White Horse Road near Silver Bay and his motorcycle hit it, he went over the SUV and landed on top of another vehicle. There are body dents in the vehicle he landed on. Dennis is in ICU at this time (Memorial Hospital) and how long he is in that unit depends on his recovery.
I will put more information as it comes available.

Monday  3:30 PM  Dennis is in Critical condition in the ICU unit. At this time they are trying to get together a team of doctors to do surgery on the pelvic area on Thursday and it is going to be a very extensive surgery.  He is moving his arms and legs - he has some tinging in his legs. He is weak on 1 side but they said that is to be expected due to the swelling. This is major body trauma!  It is possible there will be another surgery on his neck to go in from the back side and do more repairs but that is not firm at this time.
You can post personal messages to Dennis by hitting reply. We will make sure Abbey gets the messages.   If you get information before it gets posted here, please post what you know so we can all stay informed!

You can send Dennis an e-greeting at the hospital.  Just go to www.ghs.org and click on the area for patient's and visitors tab and then click on visitors and send e-card.  They will print it out and deliver it to Dennis.  I heard tonight that Dennis will be having surgery tomorrow on his pelvis.  Hope all goes well.  Many prayer's are being said for Dennis to have a complete and speedy recovery and many more are needed.

The card idea is great. Thanks for letting us know about it.  I just got new info from Cindy Kavanagh who just came from the hospital. Dennis has had a remarkable improvement day. She said he talked a good bit and seemed rather perky. His main concern was that people did not let this hinder them from being on their bikes and having a good time.
He will be having pelvic surgery within a day or two still but may not have to have another surgery on his back. They will wait and see how he improves in that area. Cindy said he does not have a broken leg - don't know about the wrap that was on it this morning from just below the knee to just above the ankle but it is not broken. He is in traction to keep the pressure off of his pelvic area.   What a miracle!

Just got word that Dennis has just now gone into surgery for his pelvic area repair. I was told the surgery will take several hours so when we hear results, they will be posted.

The surgery took about 2 1/2 hours and went great!  Dennis has amazed even the doctors. On a pain level of 1 - 10, Dennis says his is at a 3.  During the surgery they put a plate and screws in and said he will need to use crutches or a walker for about 3 months.  There is discussion about another surgery on his back but nothing firm yet. He is no longer in traction - not needed after today's surgery.   What a miracle!

We saw Dennis last night and he was very talkative. He said he could rest later when we commented that we didn't want to tire him out. Dennis had on a neck brace that will probably be his friend for awhile and also had a plastic brace on his stomach area. There are plans to have him sitting up within a day or two. I am sure he will be glad to sit up.

Word just in from Bill Holley - he just left from seeing Dennis and they were taking him down to physical therapy!!!

Abbey seems to be holding up pretty good too but she is tired.

More info later....

GOD IS IN THE HOUSE!!!!   Chris and I just left the hospital at 9:06 p.m. and Dennis is AMAZING!   He is out of ICU.    He is in room 2426.  To call it is 455-72426.  He would love to hear from all of you.  He actually got to have real food today.....if you call broth and jello real food.  But for someone who couldn't even have water yesterday....that is real food.
He is very alert and determined to work his way through this.  He and Abbey both are such a testimony to us in their desire to "beat the odds". Abbey has already beat the odds once before.    How could you ask for a better mentor to get through something like this Cheesy   Dennis is scheduled for another surgery at 10:30 in the morning on his spine.  Please continue to pray!  They want him to stand up by Friday.
As if that wasn't enough miracles......in walks Terry and Lee Cross at around 8:30 p.m. to visit Dennis and Abbey.  What an amazing few moments!
Will keep you posted......

Nancy, correction to the way to dial a patient room at GMH.  You have to call 455-7000 then dial 8+2426 (Dennis) for the room or if you get a recording follow the instructions in the recording.  Just thought you'd want to know.

Just got off the phone with Abbey and Dennis was being brought back into the room after his neck/spinal surgery today as we were talking.  He did great but when the doc got in there it was worse than thought.  The doc is still shaking his head as to how Dennis is doing so well.  Abbey said that there were multiple fractures in the neck area and they had to do some bone graphs but doctor feels like all is going well.  We hope this is the last surgery.
Dennis has changed rooms. He is now in a suite.  Must have something to do with all the company and noise we are making (ha)! He is now in room 2424.  Abbey says she can't believe that... as she can't stand Jeff Gordon (24) and here they are in double digit 24!
Abbey sounds great!!  She said she is fighting a migraine so hope the redirection of her attention to Dennis now will get her through it!
Keep praying......

Talked to Abbey this afternoon and Dennis actually stood up today.  She said it was an ordeal and it took him longer to get up than he stood up but it was amazing to watch him get through it.  They are putting a trapeze bar above his bed so he can move himself.  They are also talking about putting a transfer bar by the bed so Abbey can help Dennis sit up and stand up but Abbey wants to make sure he is a little more comfortable with the movement before she tries.  She was hoping that tonight they might take off his neck brace.

Dennis seemed to be doing very well today under the circumstances. He had a very busy day again today with CT scan and plenty of company too. He remains in good spirits and upbeat which does not surprise those of us who know Dennis.

Looking ahead to the time when he is back home may well be the time when he needs our support the most.  Abbey will have her hands full and will need our help each day. There may even some modifications to certain things in the home that will need to be done prior to him getting home to help him to get from one place to another. Lets all step up and be there when he gets home to help Dennis progress as fast as possible.  He will need help getting around to do simple things, help with his physical therapy, transportation, home chores that he can no longer perform.  The list goes on.  Abbey can't do it all especially if she is required to lift and help Dennis move from one place, or position to another.

Please be thinking about that time and how we can pitch to help.

I,for one, will be there as often as possible and hope that you will too.

Oh how I have missed yall!  I was out of town for a few days and am so glad for the updates from you others. Please keep on posting!!!
Bill, you have a really good point and it is a good idea to already be thinking of ways we will be able to assist them.

I had an update on my e-mail from Abbey earlier today. Here it is...

Well, it's Sunday morning, which means we made it through Saturday. After a rather restless and uncomfortable night on Friday, we had a chance to talk to the doctor Sat. morning about positioning of the Cervical collar and the bed. He told DT just what I had, that the collar can be loosened to be comfortable, as long as he's laying down (in other words, when he stands or walks, it'll need to be tight), and he should lower the bed to make it tolerable. Not getting sleep is worse than having the bed at a lesser angle he said.

We had a great nurse and tech. on duty Saturday. Shannon and her aunt actually acted as though they'd dealt with Orthopedic patients before. They weren't afraid to move him, and so, we were able to give him his first bath in a week. Now, it obviously wasn't a real water bath, but it did get rid of some of the stink.

Between the 3 of us, we were able to roll DT over and take the front and back pieces of his "shell" off, and clean around underneath. Shannon was great and got into all his "cracks", if you know what I mean. We also took the front and back pieces off his collar to redress his incisions. There are times I still think I should have been a nurse......hmmm!

They sent a little girl from PT to get DT up and on the walker. Turns out, I had come to talk to one of her amputee patients about a year ago, and she remembered me.....small world! By the time DT got himself sitting on the side of the bed, then put feet on the floor with the walker, he was whipped! After he took a minute to catch his breath, he layed back down for a little nap.

Having the freedom to change the bed angles a little more, and the fit of the collar a little more up to him, made Sat. night a little quieter. Jeff Gordon winning the race did not!!! I'm not sure how much he actually slept, but I think he was at least a little more comfortable.

I have spent the night by his bedside since he's been in a room. At this point, I'm not sure I really need to be here, other than, he's asked me to stay. I am working on being able to sleep at home tonight....that would be a treat!!!

Today's issue looks like IV lines. We have not been able to draw blood from DT's arms. First they were really swollen, now I think all his veins have just collapsed. They have sent special lab techs. to get blood, and there's been little success.

His last remaining IV just died, and they can't get a new line in. Looks like they will ask the Doctor to order a PIC line. That way, they can give him all his IV meds (Morphine) and, be able to draw blood. Not sure why they didn't do this from the start.

If I had to guess, I would say DT is waiting for the cute little PT girl to make it down this way. Right now, that's the highlite of his day.....

More later,
Abbey
