Myrtle Beach, SC - New and amended ordinances affecting motorcyclists were approved by the Myrtle Beach City Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 23, 2008.  Five are effective immediately.  The remaining 10 ordinances take effect Sunday, December 21, 2008, which is 90 days from adoption.

Effective immediately is 2008-68 which states "No loud mufflers; EPA labeling required, or maximum 87 decibels allowed at idle measurement."

Expect traffic checkpoints to be set up by the Myrtle Beach Police Department during the Fall Rally which is October 1-5, 2008.  In addition to required license, registration and proof of insurance, vehicles will be checked for violations related to equipment and noise.

2008-64  New law that requires helmets and protective eyewear for cycles and mopeds does not go into effect until December 21, 2008.

Once in effect the new laws will be in effect the entire year, not just during bike rallies.

No, we're not going.  They will have at least a couple of checkpoints set up.  The question is will they be trying to find a lot of violations of the new ordinances to justify their stand?  It will be interesting to see what happens.

I'll never step foot inside the city again. They will be enforcing noise ordinance. That is of course pending currewnt legal challanges.

Here are 2 traffic checkpoints I know of:

The Myrtle Beach Police Department will conduct a traffic checkpoint at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 on 21st Ave. North near the Department of Motor Vehicles (between Oak Street and Grissom Parkway) and at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 on Farrow Parkway at Kings Highway.Every vehicle will be stopped and checked for any violations related to equipment and noise. Each driver will be asked to show his or her license, registration and proof of insurance.
