Several months ago Terry started having severe pain in his leg but didn't really know what had happened. After much testing it was determined that he had a spiral fracture in his upper leg from the hip to the knee. Rather than have surgery to put a rod in his leg, he was told to stay off of it for many weeks and then see how it was healing. There has been so much else going on and much more detail but this will give you a basic idea of what they have been dealing with. The pain was unbearable and when he went back to the doctor last week he was put in the hospital and surgery was done last Tuesday to put a rod in the bone from the hip to knee. There was much infection (a staph infection) and it was cleaned out during surgery. Terry had started some physical therapy at the hospital but unfortunately the infection won't clear up. He had surgery again today opening all previous incisions and adding two more to clean out infection once again. Lee has been such a great little trouper but has to be exhausted! Please keep Terry and his family in your prayers as this is really a tough road. They are very dear to us all. Terry is still in Memorial Hospital in room 2417. Updates will be posted here as often as I know new information.

Terry and Lee didn't get much sleep at all last night due to the severe pain. Terry is receiving another pint of blood today and was put on a new medication that is for inflammation and will help reduce the swelling in the leg and relieve pressure.
When you visit Terry and Lee please remember that you could take germs into them that they are having a hard time fighting. Please wash your hands before you visit and then again when you leave.
Cards can be sent to 510 East Old Mill Road, Travelers Rest, SC 29690 and they will be picked up daily and delivered to Terry & Lee.

Lee said Terry was going to get a bath tonight (in bed of course) and she hoped after getting fresh & clean, and good & warm maybe he would get a good nights sleep. They didn't sleep much last night. He is feeling a little better tonight than he was earlier in the day.
Sure do hope he has a speedy recovery!
Here is a picture of them....

Thursday August 9, 2007
Things are looking up FINALLY but still a slow road to recovery. Last night Terry was able to sleep a little more but his respirations were so slow at times the monitor would go off and wake him up. About 3:00 AM he stayed awake for several hours because he was afraid to go back to sleep. When he did go back to sleep he was having dreams and his respirations were so fast that his alarms went off. But he did get some rest. His hemoglobin is still low but they hope to boost the red blood count with lots of iron instead of more blood. NOW FOR MORE GOOD NEWS - He actually got out of bed today and walked around his room with a walker.
More information as I get it!

The afternoon report is that Terry ate Chicken Noodle soup for lunch and got up to walk around his room again and walked some in the hall! It tired him out but he is working it hard. WaHoooo!
For information purposes.... Because of the time Terry has been and will be out of work, hospital and medical bills, etc. we have set up a fund for anyone who would like to donate to help them out some. This is done by their friends.... You can go into any Bank of TR branch and tell them you want to donate to the Terry Cross Recovery Fund and they will put your money directly into the account.

Friday August 9 Terry wasn't very sleepy though the night so that makes them both pretty tired this morning but Terry has already been up, had a bath and walked in the hall. He is drinking "boost" and a protein drink 3 times a day and eating some soft foods. There is talk of leaving the hospital late next week if he continues to progress.
Thats our Terry!! No keeping him down.

Sharon, Mark, Jeff and I went to see Terry and Lee tonight. He was so worn out that he dozed a bit of the short time we were there. He is now on a blood thinner just to help reduce the risk of blood clots. His hemoglobin level is still very low and will have to be a bit higher before he will be able to go home. It is possible he will get more blood if the iron and vitamins don't help. He has had 4 pints already. Hopefully they will get a good nights sleep tonight.

Saturday August 11 Lee said they did get a bit of sleep last night but it really didn't help them "catch up" on sleep so they are still tired today. Terry's hemoglobin level was at 6.7 this morning so he is getting more blood today. Hopefully that will make him start feeling some better if that count comes on up. He will just be resting today.

Sunday August 12 Lee said Terry was real restless last night and didn't sleep much at all so needless to say...when physical therapy came in this morning Terry didn't feel like getting up. After receiving two pints of blood yesterday, the doctor said today that Terry's hemoglobin count was up to 8. It needs to be closer to 14 but that is almost 2 points higher than Friday. Keep the prayers coming.

When we got earlier news about Terry he was too tired to get up but he ate some lunch and then seemed to get a little bit of energy He got up and walked around the hallway. That is good news.

Monday August 13 Finally, last night Terry got to take a sleeping pill and got 3 hours of sleep! He was resting again right before lunch time. When one doctor came in this morning and checked the incisions, he said they looked real good and as far as he was concerned, Terry could go home. They still need the approval of another doctor and to make sure they can get home health nurses set up to come and help daily. He will be on an IV antibiotic at home and will get physical therapy at home. Maybe, just maybe they will get to come home tomorrow!

More news.... The doctor came in early this afternoon and told Terry and Lee that if they can get the home health care set up to start immediately, they can leave today. The Home Health Care people are supposed to come in and talk with them any time now so - hopefully that can be set up quickly. They both want to be at home so much but it will probably be more difficult when they get there. Getting around in a small room is much different than getting around in a house where there are obstacles. And knowing someone else is just outside for help has been a comfort. It will still be a slow process to gain strength back but being back in his home should be a boost to his spirit. And the family will be back together. What a blessing. Progress will still be posted.

Uh Oh! Like a yo-yo. Lee just called Terry should be able to leave the hospital in the morning. They want him to have his medicine before he leaves tomorrow then home health care will come to his house to get set up to start the next day. They will come daily until he gets to the point where he can do some of his own medication. It goes in through and IV stint.

I delayed a little posting today just because I hoped to report that Terry was home. The doctors have all said he could leave today provided the home health care is definitely set up. He got his IV meds this morning but last report was that he cannot leave until about 4:00 PM. In physical therapy the past day or two Terry has practiced going up and down one step. He has a step down den and one step to get into the front of his house. It isn't easy for him but he can do it! I will report again just as soon as I hear he is home...

Terry got to come home!!!
Late this afternoon Terry got home and he is resting now. (6:15 PM). He is feeling hungry but not much seems to taste really good to him. Lee is trying different things to see what he can eat. He had to use crutches to get into the house but he did it!
