If you want background information of Terry's progress, check the topics Terry Cross update and Terry Cross update - September 2007.
At this point ... (A recap of yesterday and current info) Most mornings started with a sponge bath and incision clean up. It takes almost two hours to get that handled and then Terry is worn out. His foot and leg swell up each time he gets up and he was happy to be back in his bed after that. He tries to get up and walk a little bit each afternoon but he tries to choose the timing just after pain meds. He is still taking Oxycotton but also gets a shot of deladid and it works best. I am not sure what it does but he can feel it going in and up through his head but the effects are fast. He still gets two antibiotics - vancomycin and risanpin which are supposed to be the best for treating the staph infection commonly known as MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aurelus). The doctor has not come in since Friday but hopefully they can get some updates sometime today.

Doctors did come in today but Terry didn't get much new information - He did find out that his hemoglobin count is 7 and it needs to be much higher but the doctor said that is not abnormal right after surgery. Physical therapy will not continue coming to him at the hospital because they cannot do much with him except walk and he is doing that on his own. Usually they would be there to help him be stretching, pulling and working his muscles but he cannot do that at this time. Bloodwork was done over the weekend and hopefully he will get some results of it in the morning.

Tuesday - Terry is resting right now - the morning routine is tough. If home health care can get the medicines set up for tomorrow it is possible Terry could go home then but it is unconfirmed at this point. His pain shot has been taken away and the pills don't work as fast. Pain comes back before time for more medicine. A previous post stated that infection levels were at 30 and that was right before surgery. The doctor told them today that at surgery the infection level was up in the 90s and the blood taken over the weekend shows it to be at 88. The doctor said this was not a normal level but was to be expected due to the trauma of the surgery. One incision still continually drains but the others all look real good. Still a long hard road but as we know Terry is fighting it with everything in him! Remember them in your prayers.

Tuesday night - just talked to both Terry & Lee and it has not been a good day. Since the medicines were changed today he has been in more pain. Also the doses upset his stomach and make him sleep.y. He has slept most of the day which has been real frustrating to him when he was so alert the past few days. His incision is still draining pretty heavy so he isn't sure what is going to happen about going home tomorrow.

At this time Terry is planning to go home sometime this afternoon. He has a 2 hour IV drip that he needs before he can leave and it had not been started as of 12:15 PM. There is some question about the meds being delivered for late this afternoon but they are anticipating all going good. Terry is still concerned about the drainage and the amount of it. I will talk to him later this evening to see if he got home and how he feels at that time and post it then.

Terry and Lee are home now but concerned. There seems to be some new infection in the top front of Terry's leg and he is running a slight fever for the first time since surgery. They found out after they got home tonight that the antibiotic Vancomycin has been cut back to one time per day instead of two. This is the one he gets thru the picc line that he can do by himself even at home. It is the strongest antibiotic and he doesn't understand why they would cut the dosage in half. Since the changes in medication yesterday Terry has not really had any time that the pain was all relieved. It is distressing and scary to them. The constant drainage also has them worried. Tonight they hope to have a restful night and maybe they can get some assurances and answers tomorrow. School pick-ups will be hard for them (Blue Ridge) so that may be a possible way to help if you are going to take or pick up your children. I will post again when we find out more.....

Please check back again later to see if I have more information. Lee said they had slept okay but Terry had been in pain most of the night and they woke up every three hours for the pain medication. She placed a call to the Orthopaedic Oncologist and to the Infectious Disease doctors this morning around 8:00 but hasn't heard anything back from them yet. She will call me later in the day and I will post more then.

Wish I had some good news but as you would guess, Terry is getting depressed. Because he cannot get complete pain relief at any time and he feels that he is not healing very good, it is getting to him. Cards, phone calls, notes on this site, or visits will be encouraging to him. If you plan to visit, call first to make sure the timing fits their schedule. Taking something for them to eat is helpful to save Lee from cooking that evening. Her schedule is ragged also. Keep them in your prayers!

No real change today - Terry is still depressed and has a headache. Terry said he was hoping to go outside and sit a little while this evening and maybe the fresh air would be good for him. He said he wished he could see faster improvement but he realizes it is a very serious infection and didn't get this bad overnight so it will take a while to improve. We had been to see him last night and it does help when someone visits. He just tires fast. Lee and Sean have been working on the rental house getting it ready to rent again so they have been really busy. It is just hard for them all right now. I will post after I talk with them tomorrow.

Terry saw his doctor this morning and talked seriously with him about helping him get over this. Terry told him he didn't want to lose his leg and wanted to be aggressive with treatment. He will go for an MRI on Wednesday night to see if the area that appears to be infected on the top of his leg is surface type infection or deep and they will look for other abcesses in his leg. Then he has an appointment on Thursday to see what the MRI shows. Getting out is good mentally but will really be hard on his body today. He will be worn out and usually has quite a bit of swelling in his foot when he has been out. He started his day with physical therapy at 7:00 AM - More detail when available...

Nancy, Thank you so much for keeping everyone up to date on Terry. I'm sorry we don't live close enough to be of much help Lee and Terry. Just let them know we are thinking about them and would love to help in some way. It makes me sad to hear that Terry is depressed he is such a warm, caring person. When we visited the HOG chapter for the first time before we joined we met him and Lee and the parking lot and he was the nicest and friendliest of all the people we came in contact with that night! I have an idea I'd like to run by you if you can call me at work 455-6114 or at home 295-0862. Just a way to let him know he's being thought about. Cindy

Today has been a slow day for Terry & Lee. Lee had a migrane this morning but seems to have it under control. I plan to go over there when I get off work and can post more tonight.

I went by Terry & Lee's house last night .Lee's headache had improved and Terry was in good spirits. He is glad they are going to do the MRI tonight so he will know if there are other abcess areas so they can be treated earlier than waiting on them to reach the surface. I will be out of town for a few days and Cindy K will be keeping updates posted.
